When the the famous Penang is mentioned, the first thing that come to most people’s minds is our famous island, the culture, the heritage sites and the food surface and they become the main characters in the picture. However, the island shall not overshadow the beauty that exists on the mainland. Here are a few places you must visit and food that you must try when you are here at mainland Penang.
1.) Visit Tow Boo Kong Temple Butterworth
The Tow Boo Kong Temple Butterworth translates to the Nine Emperor Gods Temple. Much like Japan and its Shinto shrines, Penang is also a religious state and many churches, shrines, temples and mosques pepper the place. Tow Boo Kong Temple is the largest temple in Butterworth dedicated to the Nine Emperor Gods of the Taoist faith. The temple started off with humble beginnings from just a small shed in 1971 on a rented land to becoming the largest temple in the year 2000 at a cost of RM7 million. This temple is 12.1km away from Ixora Hotel Penang, just a 17 minute drive away!
2.) Jalan Raja Uda Lanterns
One of the main roads in Butterworth is Jalan Raja Uda, the road was named after the late Tun Sir Uda Al-Haj bin Raja Muhammad (1894-1976), the first post-independence Governor of Penang. Jalan Raja Uda is a very long road, cutting through residential suburbs of Butterworth and the Raja Uda Industrial Estate. As the Chinese New Year celebrations draw near, a river of red lanterns will be hung above and along Jalan Raja Uda, creating a beautiful tapestry as you drive along this road. 2018 will the 9th continuous year of that tradition, it will only be taken down on the 29th day of Chinese New Year. So don’t forget to grab your chance at witnessing such a spectacle.
3.) Restaurant Chaw Choon Dim Sum
Nothing is better than a hearty breakfast, the Restaurant Chaw Choon Dim Sum is one of the go to places for locals. Dim sum has been one of the staples in the Cantonese community and is widely known internationally as a breakfast cuisine. The quality and consistency of the food at Restaurant Chaw Choon Dim Sum is evident, it’s homely and tasty. According to reviews from food bloggers around, the air ventilation in that restaurant is good and there are plenty of tables to go around, but we have our doubts, with a place this good it’s no way that place isn’t packed with customers. Restaurant Chaw Choon Dim Sum can be found in Jalan Raja Uda, just 8.3 km away from Ixora Hotel Penang, with a 17 minute drive.
4.) Ju Heng Tom Yam
Penang is located at the northern region of Malaysia, of which is close to the southern border of Thailand. Over the years, Thai cuisine has had its influence on most parts of Malaysia too, particularly the famous tom yam. Ju Heng Tom Yam is one place that embodies a localisation of the cuisine perfectly well. Ju Heng Tom Yam incorporates the tom yam into bihun soups, porridge and a economy style of topping selections accompanied with instant noodles and fried fish fillets. Ju Heng Tom Yam opens from 6pm till 3am, perfect for a midnight crave. Ju Heng Tom Yam is approximately 11.4 km away from Ixora Hotel Penang with a 14 minute drive.
